The Canadian government has just invested 600 million dollars into the future of the Canadian news industry. As they see that in order to keep their news industry relevant in an increasingly digital world, they would need to invest in initiatives to bolster Canadian news agencies online presence. One initiative which was just announced was a tax break for online news subscriptions, which was designed to incentive subscription services. Now Canadians can get 15% off the amount which they spend on online news subscriptions back.
CNN’s digital editorial chief retires:
CNN’s digital editorial chief Meredith Artley has spoken out about her recent decision to leave her coveted position. Artley had worked for CNN for over 12 years and was first employed by the highly respected news agency back in October 2009. Artley confirmed that her decision to part ways with CNN was entirely her own and that she was not forced out of her long held position and simply wants to spend more time with her young family. While Artley has officially left her position, she is expected to stay on and help the CNN digital team with her decision for a few weeks. To date, the rest of CNN’s digital team, including the head of global news, Rachel Smolkin, have chosen to remain at CNN. Currently no replacement for Meredith Ashley has been named.

One example of a medium sized newspaper which is choosing to focus their efforts online is The Port Huron Times Herald, which has decided to focus on digital news rather than print services. The Port Huron Times Herald will now only deliver printed papers three times a week but will still offer brand new content digitally on a daily basis. This decision to focus on digital content comes as the demand for newspapers around the USA and the rest of the world has decreased in recent years.
So expect to see more newspapers reduce their printing and delivery schedules and to invest more money into providing unique digital content, that individuals will be willing to subscribe to subscription services for.
